Alexis Marie (AM) is a queer, disabled, self-taught digital artist currently based in Bakersfield, CA. Her artistic journey began in 2019, creating drawings using only paper, pens, and pencils. Since transitioning to the digital medium, the foundation and driving force behind her work have remained the same— using art as a tool for healing, in an effort to better understand how her mental health and chronic pain continue to have an impact on her daily life and shape her worldview. Alexis’ body of work explores deeply personal themes, including self-discovery, femininity, autonomy, and connection.
Growing up with Cerebral Palsy, I often struggled to relate to my peers. Learning to navigate a world that was not built with me in mind proved to be incredibly challenging. My physical limitations, coupled with a complicated home life, led to constant confusion, frustration, and anxiety about myself and my body. These feelings persisted into adulthood as I began to question my purpose and the broader significance of my existence. Channeling my emotions through creative outlets has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the mind-body relationship and give life to art that is honest, perceptive, and engaging.
As an artist specializing in abstract-deconstructionist and expressionist works—both in black and gray and in color—I aim to convey the beauty and power of feeling while emphasizing the importance of emotional expression as a cornerstone of the collective human experience. I hope that my work serves as a space for reflection, inviting viewers to further explore their own identities and discomforts as they see aspects of themselves in each figure and face that I create. May my art speak to the value of empathy and community, and help others feel seen in this fast-paced and unrelenting world we share.
